Should A Domain Name Be Long Or Short? The shorter and more meaningful your domain name, the better it is. However, in these days of scarce top domain names, the length of domain names is no longer such a big issue. Unless you are a domainer [a person who buys and sells domains for a living] the length of your domain does not really matter as long as you have quality products or content to present to people who visit your site, in addition to a good marketing effort. As earlier mentioned above, domains with just one very meaningful word are always the best. Example, bread.com, house.com, lawyer.com, water.com, soccer.com etc. But the truth is that it is almost impossible to find such domain names these days, unless you buy them from the original owners - if you can afford it, that is. The next best thing is to register domain names closest to these ones, i.e. a derivative of the original ones. For example, waterpumps.com waterbottle.com watercleaner.com cleanwater.com- all from water. You could even get a domain like the following: www.worldmonetaryguide.com Note that it is a combination of three words - world, monetary and guide, thereby given precise meaning as to what your website is all about. Therefore, whoever sees it will know immediately that it is a website that concerns finance or money. |
Note also that I have been using only .com in the above examples. This is the most popular top level domain (TLD) extension. There are also .net, .org, .info, biz, .ws, .us, etc. You also have the opportunity to register domains by geographical area or by region. Hence you havethe following: .co.uk (United Kingdom) .nl (Netherlands) .cn (China) .ir (Ireland) .fr (France), .de (Germany) etc. No matter which variety you use, your domain and website will still have a global reach.
